What to Wear | Engagement Sessions

For Photographers

With wedding season quickly approaching, what better way to prep than to chat about what to wear for your engagement session!? I know that, personally, I have endless engagement sessions coming in the next few weeks and I am SO excited!!! This post will help you guide what to wear + how to prep for your engagement session, along with tips + tricks to look camera-ready! To my fellow photogs…feel free to share this post with your clients to educate them on the ways to look + feel their BEST during their engagement session with you!!

Last month, I blogged about how to prep for your senior session, and I think it was SO helpful for all of my senior clients! But, today, it’s all about my gorgeous couples + brides!! Here are a few of the best ways to prepare your outfits for the day + rock it out at your engagement session!!

1. Be Comfortable + Confident!

First and foremost, before ANYTHING else, make sure that the pieces you wear make you feel comfortable and confident! If your clothes feel too loose or too tight, are hard to move in or make you self-conscious…throw them back in the closet for another day! The better you FEEL at your engagement session, the better you will look in photos! Also, be sure to choose pieces that match YOUR style, not necessarily what everyone else would wear 🙂

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match:

This is a HUGE tip for any couples! When choosing outfits, try your best to avoid matching colors identically. Instead of sporting the good ol’ white top + jeans combo, try mixing it up with bright colors that compliment each other! If you’re planning on wearing a bright colored dress, your man would look amazing in a solid-colored button up or polo in a complimenting color! (Extra Tip! Bright colors always photograph beautifully! Royal blue, emerald green, yellow, aqua, pink, etc…they always “pop” in photos!!)

3. Add Layers + Jewelry!

When it comes to your engagement photos, don’t be afraid to accessorize! Adding layers like cardigans, sweaters, scarves, jackets and even hats + gloves add depth + gorgeous details to your outfit! Throw on a watch or a stack of bangles to add even more pretty details!

4. Bring Variety:

I always advise my couples to bring 2-3 outfits: one “dressy” outfit (this varies per couple! Some love a casual dress with flats, and some go all-out with a suite and gown!), one casual outfit (sweaters + jeans, an every day look) and one additional outfit of their choice! This way, you have more diversity in your images + different options to choose from for your save the dates!

5. Consider Professional Hair + Makeup:

Having professional hair + makeup done for your engagement session will make you feel like a million bucks, but that’s not the only reason it’s important! I suggest this tip to ALL of my clients, because professional hair + makeup artists know EXACTLY how to do your makeup so that you are camera-ready without a flaw! It’s a great time to contact the artist that you will be using on your wedding day and see if they offer “trial-runs” to test everything out before the big day! If this isn’t in the budget, plan to wear your makeup slightly heavier than normal + make sure to add lip color!

6. Bring your Furry Friends!!

I have A LOT of my couples ask me if it’s okay to bring along their dog (or other pet!) to their engagement session…the answer is always “YES!” I absolutely live when my clients bring along their pups, because it makes the photos THAT much more important to them! If your pup is a part of the family…they are always MORE than welcome to join us!! 🙂

Hope, your blog is really inspiring, encouraging, and motivating. I am a freshman in college, concentrating in photography also. Even though I HATE what I am doing right now, looking at your blog and reminding me how much I love photography, I know once I get through it, I know it will be worth it. I do hope to email you later in time to get advice about weddings, but until then, thank you for your inspiring blog.
