How to Book Your First Senior Session (Even If You’re Brand New)

Senior Sessions

If you’ve been wanting to break into senior photography – but feel stuck because you don’t know any seniors, don’t have a portfolio yet, or aren’t sure where to start – you are NOT alone.

In fact, I hear these concerns all the time:

“I don’t know any seniors.”
“I feel too old / too young / too inexperienced.”
“What if I come across as creepy?”
“I get inquiries, but they don’t turn into bookings.”

The good news is that NONE of these things disqualify you from becoming a successful senior photographer!

Let me share the exact strategy I used (and still use) to book senior sessions and build momentum, even from scratch.

Why Free Isn’t Always a Bad Word

One of the biggest mindset shifts I had to make early in my business was this:
Free can be strategic.

When done intentionally, a free senior session can:

  • Build your portfolio quickly
  • Create social proof
  • Get your work in front of more ideal seniors
  • Help you look busy before you actually are

Looking busy often leads to becoming busy.

Step 1: Find the Right Senior

Not every senior is the right fit for a free model session, and that’s okay!

The right senior:

  • Is active and engaged on social media
  • Aligns with your ideal client and aesthetic
  • Is involved in their school or community
  • Is excited to share their images

This is about strategic marketing, not random model calls.

Step 2: Make the Right Pitch

Instead of posting public model calls or discounts, I recommend reaching out privately.

Frame the session as:

  • An exciting opportunity
  • Something specific and intentional
  • A clear, well-defined experience

This builds confidence and positions you as a professional, not someone desperate for work.

Step 3: Use the Session as a Content Goldmine

One senior session can fuel:

  • Instagram posts
  • Stories
  • Reels
  • Portfolio images
  • Peer-to-peer sharing from the senior and their friends

This is how momentum starts.

Even one or two strategic sessions per month can completely change how your business looks and feels.

If you’re looking for a little more guidance and support to book your first senior session, I cover all of this in detail in the YouTube video below!

🎓 And, as a bonus I’m also sharing three free hours of shooting and editing training, where you can watch a full senior session from start to finish.
