Evelyn’s senior session was such a fun creative change of pace because we photographed somewhere brand new to me: a historic library in Charleston!!! And I am SO glad we did. Evelyn wanted her session to feel a little more moody, personal and true to HER, and this location could not have been a better fit. Instead of the more traditional bright florals and pastel Charleston buildings, we got to create something that felt bookish, thoughtful, cozy and completely unique.
We started inside the library, and I loved getting to play with a totally different kind of environment than I normally photograph. The tall white bookshelves, arched architecture, warm chandeliers and colorful rows of books gave us so many beautiful layers to work with. Evelyn’s brown polka dot dress was perfect for this portion of the session: classic, a little vintage-inspired and so pretty against the library shelves. Then we used the upstairs balcony and those gorgeous arches for some of my favorite wide shots from the day. It felt editorial and timeless in the best way!
One of my favorite things about Evelyn’s gallery is how much variety we were able to create while staying true to the overall mood of the session. The blue bookcase with her floral dress added such a fun pop of color, but still felt rich and cozy with all of the old books behind her. We also photographed outside around the library and nearby greenery, using archways, soft trees and mossy branches.
Evelyn also brought along her childhood stuffed animal, and I LOVED that detail so much!!! It made the cap-and-gown portraits feel extra personal and sweet. Those images were such a perfect mix of celebration and nostalgia: honoring who she has been while stepping into such an exciting new season.
This session was such a good reminder that senior portraits do not have to look one specific way. As a Charleston senior photographer, I love when a senior comes to me with a vision that feels different, personal and true to who they are! Evelyn’s session felt like exactly that: a little moody, a little bookish, a little classic and completely her.
Evelyn: Thank you so much for trusting me to capture a session that felt so true to you! I loved getting to explore this brand new location together, photograph inside the library and create something a little different from my usual Charleston senior sessions. You were such a joy to photograph, and I hope you love scrolling through some of my favorites 🙂
Photographers: We filmed Evelyn’s full session for The Senior Scoop, and it was such a fun one to teach through!!! Inside the membership, we talked all about shooting indoors: how I look for clean light, use architectural elements, work through tricky spaces, pose in tighter locations and still create a full gallery with variety. I cannot wait for you to watch this one inside The Senior Scoop!
